BELIEVE IN MUSIC

Ever had a day go by realizing that you couldn't recall a single song that you had heard that day? Being a musician, I don't like to admit it, but I know it happens to me all the time. I wake up a week later and wonder why I was negative about any of the circumstances I had just gone through. Then I remind myself to proactively engage in more positive and relaxing environments. One of my favorite ways to get there is to have music playing while I do the things I enjoy the most. Having the right soundtrack to a great moment, dinner, movie, date... or night out painting the town red, fashions anything good into something positively ethereal. Having a certain availability to something like that has an effect on your remainder, reducing worry and clarifying focus by keeping the main thing the main thing. Are you feeling me yet?

When is the last time you had a nice dinner? Scratch that... When is the last time you had a nice dinner with equally nice music being played by a couple of musicians? Can you even remember what the rest of that night was like? If you can't, then it has quite possibly been too long since your last respite, my friend. If you can remember, then I am going to guess that what followed was a clearer mindset, a better mood, or maybe something less subtle like a contagious smile. Just last week I had a Black Keys song stuck in my head; I couldn't get rid of it! The song had so much funk that I couldn't sit still, singing it as I carried my laundry up and down the stairs of my apartment. The biggest change I noticed was that instead of being worried about the 4 hours of Calculus homework I had to get done, I was in this surreal, laundry la-la land, wondering why I don't always have this much fun washing clothes.

This is why I believe in MUSIC AS MEDICINE. If there was easier access to live music in everyday activities, even the so called "mundane" ones, I think life in general would be smoother and more positive. More flow and less screeching halt. This is more than just a belief, it's a conviction, part of my foundation. I know it works for me, and I believe that if this kind of thing was consistently available for the eager listener as well as the passerby, quality of life would improve. Maybe in the future there will be someone to rally the troops and lead the crusade. Enjoy life with your ears open, my friends.
